Spending Valentine’s Day with Someone You Just Met

I’ve met a person several weeks ago and we only went on a date once. Should I ask her to spend Valentine’s day with me and what gift am I suppose to buy?

Don’t plan anything big, there shouldn’t be any over-the-top romantic celebration at this stage of your relationships. In case you’ve just started dating you can mention, “It’s Valentine’s day soon, I know we just met, but what would you say about doing something together on February 14? Be sensitive to the way the person reacts. If you feel there is a slight hesitation, don’t push it, back off and offer to meet some other day. Don’t take the rejection too personal. It might be that she already scheduled something else or simply thinks that Valentine’s Day comes with too many expectations.

In case the special someone accepted your Valentine’s Day invitation you should think about a small gift. If you didn’t have a chance to get to know your date that well, a classic box of candies or chocolate bar will be enough.
If you happen to know that your Valentine’s sweetheart is a big fan of Adele, bring her nicely wrapped 21. If you remember her saying that she can’t use Iphone outside because of her gloves, iPhone stylus might be just the perfect gift.

Similarly, if you male friend mentioned that Neil Gaiman is his favourite author, buy him “Stardust” or “Fragile Things”. If he said he can’t function without coffee, find a cute Caffeine molecule T-shirt.

The idea is to search for a present that tells “I pay attention to what you say and like, and bother enough to look for it.”

One more important thing to keep in mind – your date might be a little less considerate and come without a present. So don’t expect to receive anything in return and think in advance how to soften  situation if that is the case.
