Getting ready to see a new performance and can’t decide on an outfit? Although most theatres don’t have strict dress requirements, we suggest smart casual look. Also, keep in mind that evening shows are usually dressier; matinees – more informal.
As a quick reminder, here is the list of smart casual dos and don’ts:
- mid-length dress
- trousers
- skirt
- jewelry
- accessories
- blazer or cardigan
- shawl
- clutch bag
- shoes
- ballerina flats
Smart Casual Dont’s For Women:
- flip flops
- t-shirt
- slogans or logos on the top
- large tote bag
- evening gown
- sportswear
If you got a ticket to a special event such us opening nights or first few weekend nights of a major production you should come up with a more formal, dress to impress look, a posh cocktail dress might be the best choice. You might also want to look at Theatre Etiquette Dos and Don’ts.

Great ideas! I love the blue trouser-suit, and the leather jacket would be great for the right theatre.
